Beauce - Maple Country

The region La Beauce, also known as " the country of maple trees ", beholds an important concentration of maple sugar bushes, specificly maple trees (acer saccharum). Aswell, within La Beauce, one will discover the largest amount of maple sugar shacks in the province of Québec (more than 2 600). More than 20% of the world production in made in La Beauce on an area of less than 3 750 square-kilometres. In Beauce, the tradition of maple sugar is vigorous and the enthusiasm for the product is everywhere palpable. La Beauce is part of the greater region of Chaudière-Appalaches, ont he south shore of the Saint-Lawrence River and Québec City.

The ingenious people from Beauce are known as self-starters and entrepreneurs. They have forged their kingdom in the heart of the Appalachian mountain range, to the rhythm imposed by the Chaudière river and its imposing, spectacular but often disastrous spring thaw. The history of Beauce is rich and various, the river Chaudière’s valley being the oldest cradle of colonisation in Québec after the Saint-Lawrence river corridor. Beauce received its first settlers in 1737.

The answer to why the word Beauce was chosen for this region goes back to the foundation of Québec city in 1608 and is attributed to Samuel de Champlain. He caressed great ambitions for the new capital. In fact, Champlain wished that Québec beats Paris in size ! For that reason, he decided to give to the south region of his capital the same name as the one south of Paris! The two (2) Beauce’s also have in common rich and fertile land of exceptional quality. So goes the anecdote
